An early-morning Monday house fire has claimed the life of a Mount Pleasant man.
The first unit from the Mount Pleasant Fire Department arrived the 1200 block of Alexander Road at 6:19 a.m. where they discovered a single-story wood frame structure on fire. The crew discovered substantial fire coming from the roofline and moderate smoke on one side of the house
After gaining entry into the house by force, the firemen, which numbered up to 14, discovered a male victim, Juan Campos, 54, inside and brought him out onto the front yard. Emergency medical technicians responded, but Campos was later pronounced dead at the scene. It is believed that he was asleep at the time of the fire and that smoke detectors were not working.
A secondary crew search found no other victims inside. Ultimately, the structure suffered heavy fire damage in the ceiling and attic area with smoke damage throughout the house. While the cause of the fire is currently not known, a family member did advise of previous multiple electrical issues with the power shutting off at times. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is also assisting in the ongoing investigation.
