Mount Pleasant senior dies in tragic wreck

The Mount Pleasant community continues to mourn the loss of one of their very own, a senior student, who tragically died in a one-car accident Monday morning. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, troopers were notified of a one-vehicle crash at approximately 7:09 a.m. March 8. The crash occurred on State Highway 49 just east of FM 1735 in Titus County, about two miles east of Mount Pleasant. A preliminary investigation indicates a 2003 Honda Civic was traveling west bound on SH 49 in a construction zone. The driver of the Honda, 18-year-old Nataly Kristina Montoya of Mount Pleasant, attempted to avoid a construction barrel in the roadway and overcorrected. She lost control and the vehicle overturned. Montoya, a Color Guard officer of the MPHS Goin’ Gold Marching Band, was transported to a local hospital where she died a short time later. While the accident remains under investigation, no additional information is currently available.

Born February 6, 2003 in Mount Pleasant to Gilbert Montoya and Claudia Soto, she is survived by her parents; grandparents, Roberto and Socorro Soto and Teodulo and Adela Montoya; brother, Jacob Montoya; sister, Khloe Montoya; brother, Ivan Mendez; aunt and uncle, Cynthia and John Huffstetler; uncle, Robert Soto and girlfriend Brenda Aralos; uncle, Oscar Soto and girlfriend Alex Riels; and uncle, Jonathan Montoya. Visitation was held Wednesday, March 10 at the St. Michael’s Catholic Church, located at 1403 E. 1st St, Mt. Pleasant, TX 75455. Services were held Thursday, March 11 at 11 a.m. at the same location. Burial, under the direction of Bates Cooper Sloan Funeral Home, was held at Edwards Cemetery.
